Catechumens are the Church’s treasures
Since ancient times, Lent has been the season of preparation for Baptism.
We who have been baptized engage in acts of prayer, self-denial, and charity to prepare to renew our Baptismal promises at Easter. For catechumens it is the season of their final preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist – at the Easter Vigil.
Catechumens are treasures of the Church. Their desire to be united with Christ in his Church inspires and challenges us Christians to greater faithfulness.
Catechumens in Asia may often choose Christ in the face of misunderstanding and even opposition from those around them. Yet they seek to respond to Christ’s call. They are an inspiration to the entire Church.
Their willingness to join us in proclaiming Jesus as Lord confirms our own witness that has drawn these men and women to the community of believers.
During Lent, UCA News will introduce some of the men and women who will become our sister and brother Christians through Baptism at Easter. May their stories inspire renewed fervor among those of us who may take our Baptism for granted so that at Easter we can worthily welcome them into the family of faith.
