History

The Diocese of Virac (Dioecesis Viracensis), a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Caceres and formerly part of the Diocese of Legazpi in the province of Albay, was created a separate diocese by Pope Paul VI on May 27, 1974 by virtue of the Papal Bull "Divino Christi Mandato", and canonically erected on Aug. 27, 1974 with the Most Rev. Jose C. Sorra, DD as its first Bishop. The present Bishop-Ordinary, Bishop Manolo A. de los Santos, DD, was appointed on Aug. 12, 1994 to succeed Bishop Sorra, and ordained on Sept. 12, 1994 in Naga City by + Jose T. Cardinal Sanchez, DD, then Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy (Vatican) and a native of Catanduanes. He was installed as 2nd Bishop of Virac on Oct. 10, 1994 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Virac, Catanduanes by the Most Rev. Leonardo Z. Legaspi, OP, DD, Metropolitan Archbishop of Caceres.
